Hà Nội accelerates large transport works to welcome its millennium

VGP – The People’s Committee of Hà Nội is coordinating with the Ministry of Transport in speeding up and preparing for the construction of five large-scale transport projects in order to welcome the city’s millennium.

The railway route of Nhổn-Hà Nội Station will be invested by the municipal government. The site clearance for the depot was finished. As scheduled, the construction of technical infrastructure here will be started in April 2010 while the route will be built in August. The project is planned to come into operation in 2016.
The municipal authority is also drastically directing the site clearance of four other projects invested by the Ministry of Transport.
These projects include the urban railway route of Cát Linh-Hà Đông; the road Nhật Tân-Nội Bài; the Nhật Tân Bridgel and the terminal T2 of the Nội Bài International Airport.

VGP - The Grand Celebration of the 1000th birthday of Thăng Long-Hà Nội and Việt Nam’s National Tourism Year 2010 in Hà Nội will draw the participation of all the other eight member cities of the Council for Promotion of Tourism in Asia (CPTA).

At the 8th CPTA annual meeting in Tokyo, all nine member cities including Bangkok, Delhi, Hà Nội, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul, Taipei, and Tokyo, agreed to take part in the millennium of Hà Nội.
Hà Nội's delegation will discuss specific programs and plans with each of the cities.
During the meeting, participants were provided with interesting information of the two events which will be widely popularized in the member cities and posted on the CPTA's website.
Hà Nội also introduced these events through publications, pamphlets, brochures and videodiscs showcased at the meeting.

The Grand Celebration will last for 10 days on October 1-10 in 2010.
On the opening day, there will be a number of events, including an exhibition on the socio-economic achievements of Thăng Long-Hà Nội and Việt Nam as a whole, cultural and art exhibitions featuring historical milestones, and a special live art show entitled “The Whole Nation with Hà Nội”.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, PM Dũng called on all Vietnamese citizens to join the movement and to make more and more practical and specific activities in order to welcome the millennium of Thăng Long-Hà Nội.
“The whole party, army and people should highlight our national pride and patriotism, join efforts and determination to fulfill the set targets” stressed the PM.

He asked ministries, sectors and localities to focus on: (i) well implementing the plans and solutions to prevent economic downturn, ensure economic growth pace and social security; (ii) highlighting the national pride and respect to the national historical values, and raising the statures of Hà Nội and Việt Nam in the region and the world; and (iii) completing projects and organizing other activities during the run-up to the grand anniversary of the capital.
The celebration must be based on specific activities closely attached to Hà Nội’s socio-economic development plans, underlined PM Dũng when mentioning the capital’s future orientations.

VGP – The PM just approved the Program to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Thăng Long-Hà Nội, of which the backbone is a ten-day grand festival on October 1-10, 2010.

The grand anniversary will be opened at the Lý Thái Tổ Emperor Monument

The millennium will be solemnly opened in the morning of October 1, 2010 at the Lý Thái Tổ Emperor Monument. On the same day, Hà Nội will host various celebratory activities, such as an exhibition of socio-economic achievements of Việt Nam and Thăng Long-Hà Nội; an exhibition of literary and artistic works; the live show "The country and Hà Nội"; and a special variety show directed by international experts.

Between October 2 and 9, 2009, there will be many cultural and artistic activities, sports, tourist festivals, craft village festivals, inaugurations, exhibitions, and award conferring ceremonies.

On October 10, a State-level grand celebration will be held at Ba Đình Square.

Ministries, sectors and localities will also welcome the capital city’s anniversary through various cultural activities.

The celebration will be organized in some countries too.

On Sunday, June 14, the emulative campaign "The whole country looking to the millennium of Thăng Long-Hà Nội" will be launched in Hà Nội.

The municipal government will hold regular working sessions to supervise the schedule and timely remove any obstacles.

As part of its plan to celebrate the millennium, over the past time, Hà Nội has constructed the website “The 1000-year civilization of Thăng Long” and set up a file on the Temple of Literature’s doctoral steles as a nominate for the Memory of the World Program.

Vietnam, France join in knitting largest woollen blanket

Two giant pieces of woollen cloth, one knitted in France and the other in Vietnam, will be joined together to make the largest woollen blanket in the world in October on the occasion of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

Anna Owhadi Richardson, Chairwoman of the Association of Da Lat’s Friends in the Footprint of Dr. Yersin (AD@IY), said that the huge blanket is a symbol of the solidarity between the French and Vietnamese people in general and the friendship between people in Montpellier and Da Lat city and Hanoi in particular.

Knitting the largest woollen blanket was initiated by AD@ IY two years ago on the occasion of the Worldwide Knit in Public Day (June 13). The initiative aims to make a significant gift for Vietnamese Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin victims and create pleasures for pensioners at the Montpellier City Pensioners Centre.

The work has received the support of not only Montpellier City ’s people and authorities but also the UNICEF and other associations.

The woollen balls worldwide have been sent to the centre and AD@ IY has received small coloured pieces of woollen cloth (20cmx20cm) from a great number of volunteers around France.

Meanwhile, the other piece is being knitted by artisans in Da Lat city of the central highlands province of Lam Dong .

The world’s largest woollen blanket will be auctioned and the money will be donated to Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims, said Anna Owhadi Richardson, adding that the blanket will later be divided into small blankets to these victims.

The blanket continues to be expanded to register for the world’s Guinness record, she added./.

OVERVIEW
A few kilometers East of Phan Thiet are some of the most beautiful stretches of beaches in Vietnam. Some are lined with tall coconut trees, others lean against vast red sand dunes During the period between July and October, the fishing season is at its pinnacle in Phan Thiet as fishermen go out to sea. These boats form a magnificent display of lights at night and can be seen from shore. In fact, the scene is liken to a floating city by the locals.
Visiting places:
- Bai Rang: Bai Rang or Rang Beach is probably the most beautiful beach in Phan Thiet. It is located 15 Km northeast of Phan Thiet and is described by the locals as the beach that is nestled in the middle of a coconut palm forest. Other landmarks in the area of Rang beach are Da Ong Dia (boulders of the Earth God), and Suoi Tien (Celestial stream).
- Mui Ne Sand Dunes: However, by far the most popular among tourists are Mui Ne Sand Dunes and Mui Ne Beaches located 12 miles East of Phan Thiet. The sand dunes in this area are shaped by the elements of the wind and therefore is a spectacular site to the visitors.
- Mui Ne Fishing Village: Mui Ne gets its name from the local fishermen using this area as a shelter during the stormy season. Mui meaning nose or peninsula and Ne meaning to duck or to take shelter. The combination of sun, sand and deep turquoise water of the pacific ocean create a breath taking and spectacular site to the visitors.

The scenic 200km drive north on Highway One passes through the bustling city of Bien Hoa before cutting through dense rubber plantations. Cao Daism is an interesting mixture of Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism and Confucianism, all of which are evident in the garish temple at Tay Ninh. Essentially, Buddha and the Christian God are believed to both exist as deities, but Cao Dai is the third, highest deity, all of which was revealed to Ngo Van Chieu in the 1920s. By 1930, there were half a million followers, with a square kilometre around the temple at Tay Ninh owned by the Cao Dai

The head quarter of Cao Dai sect is located in Tay Ninh. This religion was founded in 1923 and now numbers over 2 million members. Heading out of town we drive to Tay Ninh to see the ornate temple of Cao Dai and attend the fantastic mid-day service when the followers fill the hall wearing colored robes, a symbol of the curious combination of the Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Afterwards we continue to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels, which were an incredible underground network constructed by Vietnamese fighters during the long struggle for independence. The tunnels contained hospitals, plus accommodation and schools, and were used as a military base for the Vietcong in the American war. The trip ends after arrival in Ho Chi Minh City

Today Ho Chi Minh City is very much the heart of Vietnamese business and entrepreneurs. Incomes here are typically twice that of Hanoi and the city’s skyline is rapidly changing, reflecting the sharp influx of foreign trade within the last decade. And yet for all this modernity, the city still retains its connections to the past, particularly so in Cholon, Saigon’s Chinatown. Here dozens of elegant temples and pagodas can be seen. The French too left their mark here – the city has many street cafes and patisseries where fresh croissants can be purchased The Cu Chi Tunnels were pivotal to the Communist’s victory over the Americans and the South Vietnamese Armies as they allowed the Viet Cong to control a large rural area around Saigon. At its height, the tunnel system, parts of which were several levels deep, stretched over 200kms from Saigon to the Cambodian border

The area of Cu Chi was one of the most pro-communist districts in the far south; indeed the VC used the tunnels to organize the 1968 Tet Offensive. During the American War the entire area of Cu Chi was designated a free fire zone and was heavily bombarded: you can still see numerous craters caused by 500 pound B52bombs.

It was this persistant bombing campaign that drove many of the residents of Cu Chi together with the Viet Cong underground. Originally the tunnels had been created as far back as 1948 to help combat the French. Now they were rapidly expanded to include innumerable trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centres kitchens and even schools.

Today the remaining tunnels of this intricate network have been widened to accommodate the larger western frame and have now become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a unique experience of what underground life in the American war must have been like and a deep appreciation of the courage and ingenuity of the Vietnamese people

Although it is also a big and chaotic metropolis, I consider this city friendlier to tourists than Hanoi. Ho chi Minh has a nice colonial center, with broad promenades and squares and some French influence buildings that should not be missed. There are also many nice temples and pagodas. Another of the things visitors should not miss are its popular markets -- a great place to taste the local food specialties, by the way. Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, lies between the Mekong Delta and South Vietnam. In the 15th century, this area were swamps, marshes and thick forests. By the early 17th century, a small township was formed. According to one theory, Saigon or Sai Con has its root in a Khmer word Prei Kor (Kapok Tree Forest).
The name Saigon was used officially in 1698, when Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu sent Mr. Nguyen Huu Canh to this region to create various districts and to form a government for this southern outpost. Because of its strategic location for trade and commerce as well as military importance, Saigon continued to grow and became a bona fide city. By 1772, Mr. Nguyen Cuu Dam began to fill many of the canals to form streets. In the mid 19th century, the French with the aid of the Spanish invaded this port city and destroyed the fort. This event was the precursor to the long struggle between the people of Vietnam and France leading to the historical defeat of the French in 1954. In the years after the defeat of the French, Vietnam was divided into two separate countries and Saigon became the hub of resettlement for many as people from north and central Vietnam immigrated south. In the 60's and 70's, Saigon was bustling with commerce and business. It was the cultural center and the capital city of South Vietnam

Day 1: Nha Trang Arrival
On arrival at the airport, you are met and transferred to hotel. After checking into hotel, we enjoy a half day tour of Nha Trang, seeing the Oceanographic Institute and the Long Son Pagoda with its famous giant Buddha image. Day 4: Hue to Bach Ma National Park (B/L)Early star from your hotel in Hue Leave hotel at 7.30 a.m for hitting upwards to Bach Ma travel center then get ready for the trek to top of Bach Ma mountain, great chances are here to learn about the diverse fauna, flora and wonderful view of Bach Ma, take a swim in the small romantic pools and fairy streams then go a break for lunch at Ngu (five) pools. An amazing waterfall of Do Quyen will be within an hour walk we head to. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5: Danang and onto Hoi An (B/L)Great scene of sunrise in the early morning, free to walk around to observe the beauty of nature for a bit then we leave after our breakfast (8.30 a.m) go to Hoian with stopover at Lang Co beach, Hai Van Pass, Cham museum and Marble mountains.
Lunch stop near the China beach and head onto the charming town of Hoian. Overnight in Hoi An.

Day 6: Hoian - Walking tour in the ancient town (B/L)Breakfast at hotel then walk with your tour guide to visit around Hoi An: the old Tan Ky House, Covered Bridge, Phuc Kien Assembly Hall. Shop for tailored made silk products or spend your time at the wonderful beach (4km away).

Day 7: My Son and Craft villages of Hoian (B/L)This day, 2 hours by car will take you to visit the Cham towers of the Hinduism in My Son, one of the 5 Vietnam Heritage sites.
